💬 Sunday Reflections #28 (New Moon intentions)
This month’s New Moon: Tues 12th Dec 23:32 GMT. And an end of year update
🎧 You can catch me presenting today’s episode of The Food Programme on BBC Radio 4 at 12:30, where I speak to Blue Zones author Dan Buettner about the culinary aspects of his research into five parts of the world where people seem to live longest. It will also be available on BBC Sounds after broadcast.
Hi! This is Leyla from A Day Well Spent, a newsletter seeking pathways to more purposeful living. If you’re reading this by chance - welcome! You can enter your email below to ensure you never miss my twice weekly posts (Thursdays and Sundays):
Hi all and happy Sunday! How wonderful to be here gain at that glorious time of the lunar month — full of possibility and anticipation — where we embrace the start of a new lunar cycle with the New Moon, which falls on Tuesday.
And it’s the last one of the year! 🌚
This means we’ll be using today’s Sunday Reflections to set our intentions for this upcoming cycle (a quite special one that straddles this year and the next) and asking ourselves:
“What am I ready to invite in?”
Is this your first time joining our monthly New Moon intention setting?
If so, welcome! It’s one of my favourite times of the month. So many readers are already achieving so much with these monthly accountability meet-ups, I am feeling quite proud of them all.
We had quite a few new people join in last month’s intention setting which was so very lovely to see — the community is flourishing!
If you would like to find out what New Moon intention setting is, how to do it and how we do it here on A Day Well Spent, have a read of this post which answers all these. Then you can head back here.
We would be delighted if you wanted to join in!

Thursday’s post was an excellent and easy practical guide on how to grow delicious mushrooms at home — from household waste! 🍄 This would make such a great project to start in the downtime between Christmas and New Year.
It’s a guest column written by the co-founder of London urban mushroom farm Fat Fox Mushrooms, they very kindly provided a discount code for their mushroom growing kits too. Even though I’m just not that into Christmas, I do think this would make a very thoughtful and unique gift for anyone into food, gardening or science!
More of my recent posts that have proved popular include: how to not catch a cold; a confession that I don’t consume any news and a piece about my short hair and why it took me 30+ years to cut it off.
Welcome to Sunday Reflections ☕
For new subscribers, welcome to our weekly gathering! This is our intimate and friendly space for community and accountability.
How it works
Each Sunday I pose a prompt or question which we discuss (and say hi) in the comments. Topics often cover self-empowerment and personal growth and these weekly check-ins allow us to get to know ourselves and the other members of the A Day Well Spent community better.
Feel free to have a browse through previous Sunday Reflections to get an idea of the stuff we talk about, which include monthly New Moon intention setting (what we’re doing today).
Before we begin
I’d like to share just a few of the deeply meaningful comments from my cherished A Day Well Spent community over the past week that made me feel all the feels:
‘Hello everyone 👋 and congratulations on your 6th month of great content here Leyla 🥳 It is really noticeable the effort and quality you put into your articles. I really enjoy this space and I find it all very wholesome including this community of readers ☺️ […] In the meantime I’ve been enjoying reading your stuff. Found last Sunday’s reflections on reframing situations particularly interesting and I’m trying to apply it in my everyday day life. Huge pleasure to be part of this community 😌 have a great week everybody 🙏🏻🌟’ - Marilia
And
Omg I know this may not be helpful to the discussion but I am feeling so LUCKY that somehow I've been able to stumble upon and be a paid subscriber to your Substack when I'm located in Australia and we seemed to not have made it on your percentage list! So just saying, I'm grateful :) - Dr Booth
We need more of you guys from Down Under!
And a new joiner note I read on Sunday morning which made my weekend:
‘Hi! I love what I've read of your free stuff. So, I'm an intuition-led human. My intuition tells me that subscribing to your writing and your community is important. Substack is a busy place with lots of distractions. I am going to be getting rid of most of my free subscribes and focusing on quality and where my feelings take me, and right now, that is toward you. Have a great day!’ - Tim
Thank you to the whole community for all your thoughtful contributions.
Also a quick thank you to everyone who shared their votes and thoughts in last Sunday’s post, a trip? If you haven’t yet, please do.
As always thank you all for being here and I am so looking forward to today’s chat!
Sunday is for awakening the mind, body and spirit 🧘
Now let’s begin.
